Find out why people from all over the world flock to World Heritage Site Mulu National Park to peek at some of earth's secrets through its immense and mystical cave systems. Although 195kms of cave passages have already been surveyed, these represent just 30% of the estimated total.
World famous show caves
The 4 show caves on this adventure features:
- Deer cave - the single largest cave passage known to man and home to millions of free tailed naked bats
- Lang's cave - containing gorgeous formations that adorn the walls
- Wind cave - named after its natural air conditioning and containing colourfully named chambers such as King's and Lady's
- Clearwater cave - named after an underground river system that flows through the cave systems and culminates with high velocity through this chamber. This is the longest underground river in South East Asia. About 140 kms have been mapped leaving much more to be explored.
Deer cave screens an impressive daily routine of some two million bats that leave the cave in a black mass every evening that forms the shape of a dragon This results in a chitter that can last up to half an hour as they begin their ritual exodus. Visitors can comfortably watch this daily spectacle from a purpose built observatory 300 m from Deer Cave.
Deer and Lang’s cave is lit from 3pm to 5pm and is accessible via a 3.4 km boardwalk from the Park’s HQ. This trail passes through some interesting vegetation allowing visitors an appreciation of the trees and flowers in bloom.
Clearwater and Wind cave can be reached via a longboat trip along the Melinau river from the resort to the cave. We will stop at the entrance of Clearwater cave to enjoy a picnic at the crystal clear waters flowing from the cave.
